City-specific rules exist: Lafayette has its own collection schedule rules that differ from Lafayette Parish's county-level regulations. If you live in Lafayette, check the city-specific page instead.

In order to provide for the health and welfare of Lafayette City-Parish residents, collection and disposal service for solid waste, yard waste and white goods is mandatory for all residential units located within the service area. Regularly scheduled collection and disposal service for solid waste, yard waste, white goods and recyclables must be with a contractor authorized by LCG to provide such service. Supplemental solid waste, yard waste, white goods and recyclables collection and disposal service, may not be contracted for by the owner of a residential unit unless the owner is already signed up and paying for weekly solid waste, yard waste, white goods and recyclables collection and disposal service as provided for by the then-current LCG contract(s).

Full Breakdown

LCG Code § 74-30 makes collection and disposal service for solid waste, yard waste and white goods mandatory for every residential unit in the service area, which § 74-1 defines as the City of Lafayette plus the rural (unincorporated) parish. Service must run through a contractor LCG has authorized; residents cannot substitute their own hauler unless already signed up for the LCG contract. Under § 74-43, residential collection may only occur between 4:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., unless the public works director approves extended hours. Recycling service is billed as 'city only' under § 74-60, so rural residents get solid waste and yard waste pickup but not the recycling charge. Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville and Milton run their own separate systems and are not covered by this code.

Violations & Fines

Nonpayment for mandatory service draws a notice under § 74-23(b); after 30 days unresolved it's $50/week up to $200, added to the property tax bill as a lien. General chapter violations can bring a fine up to $1,000 and/or 30 days in jail per § 74-23(e).
