Okaloosa County, FL Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

Section 2.21.05.5 treats dumpsters as an accessory use permitted in all zoning districts except R-1 and R-2, the county's single-family residential categories. Inside those two districts, the only dumpster allowed is a temporary construction dumpster placed on a single-family, detached-dwelling lot "for construction purposes only," and it "must be removed upon completion of construction," so a homeowner cannot keep a permanent trash dumpster on an R-1 or R-2 lot the way a commercial or multifamily property can.

Wherever a dumpster is allowed, the code sets physical standards: it "must be screened from view of adjoining property owners and streets at first floor level" on at least three sides, though temporary construction and demolition-debris dumpsters are exempt from that screening rule. Screening can be a wood fence, a concrete block and stucco wall, a masonry or brick wall, or vegetative screening meeting § 6.05.07, and screening built for a dumpster is exempt from the county's usual fence-height cap as long as it does not block sightlines to adjacent streets. Every dumpster has to sit off the public right-of-way on a paved pad or hard surface, with paved or otherwise stabilized vehicle access for the collection truck. In the industrial protected (IP) zoning district, the screening requirement drops away entirely if the dumpster sits more than 200 feet from residentially zoned or occupied property and is kept out of front yards, agricultural districts, and construction sites in other zoning categories.
