San Luis Obispo County, CA Trash & Recycling: Dumpster Rules (2026)

County Code Sec. 8.12.250(c) sets the physical standard for dumpster and bin storage areas countywide: the storage area must sit within 100 feet of the dwelling or building it serves, and any container or bin over 100-gallon capacity cannot be permanently placed closer than 25 feet to a window, door, or ventilation intake on the subject property or an adjacent one. No can or bin may be permanently located in a front setback area or on public property, and the pad must be concrete or another impervious surface with an anti-roll curb. Separately, Sec. 8.12.260 restricts roll-off boxes to nonputrescible waste and recyclables and requires them to be covered in transit and marked with the hauler's name and phone number.
