Kanawha County runs no countywide curbside trash service. West Virginia law requires every household to subscribe to a hauler or prove lawful disposal. Charleston and the other cities collect for residents inside their limits; unincorporated areas use PSC-certificated private haulers such as WM.
There is no Kanawha County trash department. If you live in the unincorporated county — outside Charleston, St. Albans, South Charleston, Dunbar, Nitro and the smaller towns — you arrange service yourself with a private hauler certificated by the West Virginia Public Service Commission, and you pay that company directly. WM (Waste Management) is the dominant hauler and runs the Charleston-area landfill on South Park Road. West Virginia does not leave garbage optional: Code §22C-4-10 makes every household either subscribe to collection or prove lawful disposal on a 30-day cycle. Inside the cities the municipality collects on a set schedule, so check with city hall.
No county citation exists for a missed pickup in unincorporated areas. But having no service and no proof of lawful disposal violates WV Code §22C-4-10, and accumulated garbage can be abated as a nuisance.
