Full Breakdown

County Code Sec. 22-43(a) sets the collection floor for the unincorporated county: refuse and recyclable materials from every residential area must be collected "not less than once weekly," yard waste and brush for composting must go out weekly from March through the end of December, and Christmas trees are collected countywide, including condominiums and apartments, during the first two weeks of January. Sec. 22-43(b) requires twice-weekly service for hotels, motels, restaurants, schools, institutions and apartments, and lets the health department mandate more frequent pickup where public health requires it.

Sec. , and the Director of Public Works can force a hauler to shift its hours if collection is creating a nuisance or noise disturbance in a neighborhood. Sec. , but only if the collection point sits at least 100 yards from any lawfully occupied residential dwelling. Subsection (c) bars any permitted hauler from mixing source-separated recyclables or yard waste back into the regular refuse load. Sec. 22-22 caps how long a resident can leave containers at the curb: they must go out at ground level, out of the vehicle travel way, and cannot sit at the curb or an agreed collection point for more than 24 hours after being set out.

Refuse and food waste vehicles, apart from dedicated recycling trucks, must pass an annual county inspection under Sec. 22-38, and no one may operate as a refuse or food waste remover without a Department of Public Works permit under Sec. 22-56.

Violations & Fines

Sec. 22-42 and Sec. 22-43 sit in Article III of Chapter 22, so a hauler that collects outside the 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. window, skips the weekly residential minimum, or ignores the twice-weekly commercial schedule commits a Class 3 misdemeanor under Sec. 22-36. That section also lets the Department of Public Works suspend or revoke a refuse removal permit for any Article III or Article VII violation, and inspectors enforce the annual vehicle-inspection requirement of Sec. 22-38 as a condition of keeping that permit active.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does Prince William County require trash pickup?
County Code Sec. 22-43(a) sets a floor of once weekly for refuse and recyclables at every residential address in the unincorporated county. Yard waste and brush are collected weekly from March through the end of December for composting, and Christmas trees are picked up countywide during the first two weeks of January, including at condominiums and apartments.
What hours can a trash truck run in Prince William County?
Sec. 22-42(a) limits refuse, recycling and food waste collection to the hours between 5:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Business and industrial-zoned properties are the one exception: their routes may start at 4:00 a.m., but only if the collection point is at least 100 yards from any occupied home, under Sec. 22-42(b).
How long can I leave my trash cans at the curb?
Sec. 22-22 requires containers to be placed out of the vehicle travel way at ground level and limits curbside placement to 24 hours from the time they are set out. Leaving containers at the curb longer than that violates the placement rule enforced by the Department of Public Works.
What happens if a hauler violates the pickup schedule?
Sections 22-42 and 22-43 fall under Article III, so a violation is a Class 3 misdemeanor under Sec. 22-36. The Department of Public Works can also suspend or revoke the hauler's refuse removal permit issued under Sec. 22-56 for any Article III violation, on top of the criminal penalty.
