Chesterfield ended its subsidized curbside recycling in 2023. Curbside recycling is now subscription-based through private haulers; the county still provides free recycling drop-off at both convenience centers and at community recycling centers in seven parks.
Recycling is not mandatory and is no longer a county-subsidized curbside program. As of July 1, 2023, the county moved to a model where citizens access curbside recycling through a direct relationship with private haulers such as Choice Waste, GFL Environmental, Local Disposal, Tidewater Fibre, or Waste Management. For residents who don't subscribe, the county continues providing free drop-off recycling at its two convenience centers, plus community recycling centers at seven parks (including Rockwood, Huguenot, and Ettrick). Accepted materials follow the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) 'What to Recycle' guidance.
Recycling is voluntary, so there is no penalty for not recycling. Improperly dumping recyclables elsewhere, however, still falls under the state anti-dumping law.
