Per the MCMUA, 'The New Jersey Statewide Mandatory Source Separation and Recycling Act, N.J.S.A. 13:1E-99.11 et seq., set forth source separate and recycle requirements applicable to all New Jersey's residents, businesses and institutions for designated materials.' Since 1993 the Morris County Solid Waste Management Plan has required designated materials be kept separate from garbage where generated. Mandated materials include aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles (coded 1 and 2), steel/tin cans, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, mixed paper, leaves, grass clippings, brush, natural wood waste, used motor oil, lead-acid batteries, metal appliances, whole tires, and electronics. These are the minimum; municipalities may mandate additional materials in their own recycling ordinances.

Violations & Fines

Transfer-station loads are inspected for mandated recyclables; write-ups are usually educational, but municipal recycling ordinances can impose fines for non-separation.
