Hillsborough County LDC §4.01.06 protects 'grand oaks' — live oaks, laurel oaks, swamp chestnut oaks, or other native oaks with a DBH of 34 inches or greater. They cannot be removed without administrative authorization and replacement requirements apply.
Pruning of a grand oak (other than minor pruning) is prohibited unless conducted in accordance with ANSI A 300 Pruning Standards by an ISA-certified or ASCA Registered Consulting Arborist. Replacement requirements for authorized grand-oak removal generally cap inch-for-inch DBH replacement at a discretionary level.
Fines for unauthorized grand-oak removal can exceed $1,000 per tree plus replacement-cost recovery.
