Sparks has no heritage or landmark-tree designation list. Instead it protects public trees as a class, in parks, medians, parkways, and along the Truckee River, under its Urban Forestry code, managed by the city urban forester and tree committee.
Rather than tagging individual specimen trees, Sparks Municipal Code Chapter 12.28 protects the public canopy as a system. Its stated purposes are to keep the maximum tree cover on public lands, maintain trees in a healthy and nonhazardous condition, and preserve diversity in species and age classes for a stable urban forest. The tree committee, made up of the Parks and Recreation Commission, advises on protection, maintenance, and planting. Harming any public tree without consent is prohibited. Because the code targets public trees, large trees on private property are not specially designated as heritage trees, and no citywide landmark-tree nomination program exists.
Harming a protected public tree is a misdemeanor and a public nuisance under 12.28.100. The city serves a ten-day abatement notice and can recover its costs as a lien against the property.
