Coral Gables requires a tree removal permit before removing any tree on public or private property that meets size thresholds. Chapter 82, Article II of the Code of Ordinances governs tree protection. A tree survey is required with permit applications. The city tree preservation agency must approve all removals, relocations, and replacements within 10 working days.
Under Chapter 82, Article II (Tree Protection and Preservation) of the Coral Gables Code of Ordinances, no tree meeting dimensional thresholds may be removed, relocated, or significantly modified without a permit from the city tree preservation agency. Permit applications require a tree survey showing the location of all existing trees on the site and adjacent right-of-way that meet size requirements. The tree preservation agency must render a decision within 10 working days of receiving a complete application. Applicants must submit a site plan showing proposed replacement plantings, property lines, and existing/proposed structures. Routine pruning on private property does not require a permit unless more than 25% of the tree canopy is removed or branches larger than 10 inches in diameter are cut. All tree work must be performed by a qualified arborist. The Greenspace Management Division manages city trees and can be contacted at PWGreenspace@coralgables.com. Landscape permits are available through the Public Works Department.
Removing a tree without a permit is a serious violation subject to substantial fines. The city may require replacement trees at a ratio exceeding the original removal plus contribution to the city Tree Trust Fund. Unauthorized removal of heritage or specimen trees carries the highest penalties. Code Enforcement at (305) 460-5216 investigates violations.
