Coral Gables has a strong heritage tree program protecting significant trees including the city's iconic banyan trees. Heritage and specimen trees receive the highest level of protection under Chapter 82 of the Code of Ordinances. Removal of heritage trees is rarely approved and requires extensive mitigation including replacement plantings and Tree Trust Fund contributions.
Coral Gables' heritage tree program under Chapter 82, Article II of the Code of Ordinances provides the highest level of protection for trees of exceptional size, age, species significance, or historical value. The city's iconic banyan trees (Ficus benghalensis) are among the most recognized heritage trees in South Florida. Heritage and specimen trees are identified by species and dimensional criteria including trunk diameter, canopy spread, and overall condition. Removal of heritage trees is rarely permitted and only under extraordinary circumstances such as imminent danger or severe disease confirmed by a certified arborist. When removal is approved, extensive mitigation is required including replacement plantings at enhanced ratios and contributions to the city Tree Trust Fund. The Tree Trust Fund finances planting replacement trees throughout the city when sites cannot accommodate required replacement plantings. Heritage trees on development sites may significantly constrain building footprints and require project redesign to preserve them. The Greenspace Management Division maintains an inventory of significant trees. Contact PWGreenspace@coralgables.com for heritage tree questions.
Unauthorized removal of a heritage tree carries the most severe penalties under the tree ordinance, including maximum fines, mandatory replacement at enhanced ratios, and Tree Trust Fund contributions that can reach thousands of dollars. The city may pursue legal action for willful destruction of heritage trees. Criminal charges may apply in extreme cases.
