Coral Gables has one of South Florida's strictest tree protection ordinances under Chapter 82. Permits are required for removal, relocation, or major pruning (branches over 10 inches diameter) of protected trees. Specimen trees 18 inches DBH or larger require arborist reports and mitigation plans. Trees 24 inches DBH or larger require double mitigation.
Chapter 82 (Vegetation) requires permits for tree removal, relocation, or pruning of large branches exceeding 10 inches in diameter on private property. All right-of-way tree work requires a separate permit. Specimen trees measuring 18 inches or larger DBH (diameter at breast height, measured 4.5 feet from ground) receive enhanced protection requiring arborist reports, tree disposition plans, and mitigation calculations. Trees at 24 inches DBH or larger require double mitigation. Replacement trees must compensate for canopy loss area per Table 82-1. When a site cannot accommodate required replacement trees, owners must contribute $1,500 per 500 square feet of canopy deficit to the City Tree Trust Fund. Applications require tree disposition plans, arborist reports, surveys, and mitigation calculations.
Unauthorized tree removal results in significant fines, mandatory replacement at double mitigation rates, and tree trust fund contributions. Contact Public Works Greenspace Division at PWGreenspace@coralgables.com for permits.
