Miami-Dade County Code Section 24-49 requires a tree removal or relocation permit for any tree with a trunk diameter of 5 inches or more measured at 4.5 feet above ground level in unincorporated areas. The Division of Environmental Resource Management (DERM) reviews tree removal applications. Improper pruning including hat-racking, topping, lion-tailing, trunk girdling, excessive root cutting, or use of tree-killing chemicals that effectively destroys a tree is a violation. Tree trimming does not require a permit if done per ANSI A-300 standards. Contact the Miami-Dade Tree Program at 305-372-6574 for permit applications and information.
Removing trees without a permit is a code violation. Effective tree destruction through improper pruning violates Section 24-49. Replacement plantings may be required. DERM enforces tree protection.
