Carports in Antioch are governed by the Zoning Code as accessory structures. Detached carports must sit behind the front yard setback, must be at least 5 feet from interior side and rear lot lines (20 feet from a side street on a corner lot), and may not exceed 15 feet in height. The garage or carport opening serving a residence must be at least 20 feet from the exterior property line so a parked car will not overhang the sidewalk.
Antioch's zoning code treats carports as accessory structures subject to the rules in Article 6 (Yards) and Article 17 (Parking Requirements) of Chapter 5, Title 9. Detached accessory structures, including carports, are limited to a 15-foot maximum height in residential districts and must be located behind the required front yard setback for the underlying zone. Detached accessory structures may cover no more than 40% of the rear yard area required for the main building. Side-yard setbacks are 5 feet on interior lots and 20 feet on the street side of corner lots; the rear setback is generally 5 feet (10 feet on a double-frontage lot). Section 9-5.1717 of the Antioch Municipal Code governs garage and carport design standards, and Section 9-5.1709 sets parking-space dimensions a carport stall must meet. The garage or carport door of any residence must sit at least 20 feet back from the exterior property line so that a vehicle parked in the driveway does not overhang the sidewalk or right-of-way. Fire separation, post anchorage, and roof loading must comply with the California Building Code as adopted by the City. ADU-related parking conversions are covered by Antioch's ADU ordinance at Municipal Code 9-5.3805 and California Government Code 65852.2: replacement parking is generally not required when an enclosed garage is converted to an ADU, but a freestanding carport built to meet ADU parking obligations is still subject to the accessory-structure rules above. Building permits are required for carport construction; portable, freestanding, fully removable shelters under 120 square feet, under 8 feet tall, and without electrical or plumbing fall under the small portable-storage exception and are exempt from the setback rules but must still leave required parking and access intact.
Building a carport without a building permit, encroaching into a required setback, exceeding the 15-foot height cap, or placing a carport in a way that lets a parked vehicle overhang the public sidewalk can trigger stop-work orders, code-enforcement citations, and required removal or relocation. Carports built within a public-utility easement may also have to be moved at the owner's cost.
