Antioch, CA Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Section 5-17.02(B) of the Antioch Municipal Code enumerates specific vehicle-related disturbing noises that violate section 5-17.01. Paragraph (1) covers 'the sounding of any horn, signal, or noise device on any automobile, motorcycle, bus, truck, or other vehicle in any other manner or for any other purpose than required by the California Vehicle Code or other laws of the state,' and requires that 'the exhaust system of all such vehicles shall be so equipped or constructed as to prevent any unreasonably loud, disturbing, or unnecessary noise.' Paragraph (2) prohibits 'racing the engine of any motor vehicle (while such vehicle is not in motion), except when necessary to do so in the course of repairing, adjusting, or testing such vehicle.' These city provisions operate alongside California Vehicle Code section 27150 (adequate muffler required) and section 27151 (modification of exhaust system to amplify noise prohibited), which Antioch Police can enforce directly.
