Antioch prohibits barbed wire, razor ribbon and similar wire on top of any fence. Chain link near public areas must be vinyl-clad, retaining walls adjacent to streets must use decorative masonry, and walls between residential and non-residential uses must be of masonry construction.
Antioch Municipal Code §9-5.1601 (General Requirements) sets the City's material rules. Barbed wire, razor ribbon and other similar wire are prohibited on top of any fence, although the Zoning Administrator may grant exceptions. Chain-link fencing visible from public areas must use vinyl-clad materials. Retaining walls adjacent to streets must be constructed of decorative masonry block or an equivalent material. Walls separating residential and non-residential uses must be of masonry construction. Fences, walls, hedges, and other structures or vegetation shall not obstruct a clear vision zone at intersections or driveways. Existing non-conforming fences may remain under the code's grandfather provisions. For temporary or construction site fencing, the City's Common Violations page identifies blighted, unmaintained, or unsecured fencing as a code-enforcement priority.
Prohibited materials (barbed wire on top of a fence, non-vinyl-clad chain link facing the public, non-masonry walls between residential/non-residential uses) can be abated by Code Enforcement under AMC §1-5.02. Material violations are commonly resolved by replacement or removal; continued non-compliance leads to administrative citations and possible misdemeanor referral.
