Shed permit rules in Spartanburg County, SC β also referred to as storage shed, backyard shed, or accessory building regulations β set size limits, setbacks, and when a building permit is required.
Under the ULMO there is no limit on the number of accessory buildings, but detached sheds, dry-storage structures, and greenhouses may only be located in the rear yard and rear setback areas. All accessory structures must otherwise meet the Table 3 setbacks.
ULMO Section 3.20 sets the rules for accessory buildings in unincorporated Spartanburg County. There is no cap on how many accessory buildings a lot may have, but their placement is regulated: sheds and dry-storage buildings and greenhouses are confined to rear yard and rear setback areas, and no accessory building may sit in a required bufferyard. Where an accessory structure is not specifically excepted, it must observe the same required setbacks shown on Table 3. Building permits are handled through the County Building Codes Department; check whether your parcel is in the ULMO area or the Southwest Performance Zoning Area, which is governed separately.
Placing a shed in a required front/side setback or bufferyard, or building without a permit, is a zoning violation enforced by County Planning & Development and Building Codes.
