CVMC 6.04.100 generally prohibits hives within 600 feet of any residential building. Narrow exceptions exist for educational, medical research, and scientific study purposes on residential property if maintained without nuisance.
CVMC Section 6.04.100 makes it unlawful to allow, permit, or maintain stands or hives of bees on any premises within 600 feet of any building used for residential purposes. This is one of the more restrictive beekeeping ordinances in San Diego County. Exceptions permit hives in schoolhouses or museums for study, in physicians' offices or laboratories for medical research, and on residential property for scientific research when maintained without creating a nuisance to surrounding property owners. The ordinance was established by Ordinance 3226 in 2012. At the state level, California mandates all beekeepers register through the Apiary Protection Program using the BeeWhere registration system. The 600-foot setback effectively prohibits most urban beekeeping in Chula Vista's residential neighborhoods.
Unauthorized beekeeping within 600 feet of residences: infraction citation. Nuisance bees: abatement by animal control. Unregistered hives also violate state law.
