Prince George's County's 27-year pit bull ban was repealed by CB-97-2025, effective February 2, 2026. Pit bull terriers may now be legally owned and adopted with a county permit, microchip, spay/neuter, rabies proof, and a Pet Parenting certificate.
From 1996 until early 2026, County Code Sec. 3-185.01 banned owning, keeping, or harboring a pit bull terrier (defined in Sec. 3-101 as Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, and predominant mixes). The County Council voted 7-0 on November 18, 2025 to repeal the ban via CB-97-2025, which took effect February 2, 2026. Owners and adopters must now obtain a pit bull permit ($25 plus the standard license fee) and show proof of rabies vaccination, microchipping, and spay/neuter (exhibition is the only spay/neuter exception), plus a Pet Parenting class certificate. Statewide, Maryland Cts. & Jud. Proc. §3-1901 sets dog-owner liability for all breeds; the 2012 Tracey v. Solesky pit-bull ruling was reversed in 2014.
Owning a pit bull without the required permit, microchip, or spay/neuter can bring citations; dangerous-dog penalties apply regardless of breed.
