Cobb County Code Ch. 10 allows backyard chickens on residential lots of 2+ acres (AG and R-80/R-40 zones). Under 2 acres not permitted. Roosters prohibited. Livestock (goats, pigs, horses) requires AG zoning or 2+ acre minimum.
Cobb County Code of Ordinances Ch. 10 (Animals) and the Zoning Ordinance regulate poultry and livestock. Chickens are permitted only on residential lots of at least 2 acres in zoning districts R-80, R-40, AG, and RR; smaller lots in R-20, R-15, R-30, and R-12 (the majority of unincorporated Cobb) may NOT keep chickens. Roosters are prohibited countywide due to crowing noise. Coops must be at least 25 feet from any property line and 50 feet from dwellings on adjoining lots. Livestock (goats, pigs, horses, cattle) is limited to AG-zoned properties or lots 2+ acres. Cobb County Animal Services (1060 Al Bishop Drive, 770-499-4136) responds to complaints. Georgia Right to Farm Act (O.C.G.A. Β§41-1-7) protects pre-existing agricultural operations. Several Cobb cities (Acworth, Kennesaw, Marietta, Smyrna) have separate, often stricter chicken rules.
Keeping chickens on under-size lot or rooster: Β§1-10 Magistrate Court citation $100β$500. Continued violation: daily fines; removal of animals possible.
