Larger domestic animals such as cattle, horses, hogs, sheep and goats may be kept in unincorporated Sedgwick County without being a nuisance if you provide at least 10,000 sq ft of fenced space per animal, keep set-back distances from neighboring homes, and manage waste and rodents.
Sedgwick County Code sec. 5-161(a) states that maintaining larger domestic animals is not a nuisance if you meet standards including: at least 10,000 sq ft of fenced open space per animal when the shelter is within 300 feet of a neighboring dwelling (500 feet for hogs); a fenced enclosure; cleaning shelters at least weekly; proper waste disposal; rodent-proof grain storage; and secure fencing so animals cannot break out. Chickens and other fowl fall within the code's broad definition of "animal." Land use and density are also governed by the Wichita–Sedgwick County Unified Zoning Code (UZC) administered by MAPD, which sets agricultural-zone standards.
Failing to meet the sec. 5-161 husbandry standards can make the animals a maintained nuisance, prosecuted as a chapter 5 violation with fines up to $500 fixed by the county court.
