In unincorporated Lake County, chickens and domestic fowl are an accessory use allowed at up to one bird unit per acre (a bird unit equals 32 chickens). Fowl must be kept in the rear yard, roosters are banned, and on-site slaughter is prohibited. Farms need 20+ acres; hobby farms 2.5+
The Lake County Unified Development Ordinance No. 2560 (Sec. 154-9-060) governs chickens and domestic fowl as an accessory use in all districts except traditional and hobby farms. A maximum of one bird unit is allowed per acre of lot area; Table 9-3 sets one bird unit as 32 chickens, 16 ducks, 8 turkeys, 8 geese, or 2 ostriches/emus, counting only birds two months or older. Fowl may be kept only in the rear yard. Roosters and on-site slaughter are prohibited. Larger livestock keeping is confined to traditional farms (20+ contiguous acres) and hobby farms (2.5+ acres). Incorporated cities set their own poultry rules.
Zoning violations are enforced by the Plan Commission/Building Department; keeping more birds or animals than allowed is prohibited unless approved as a special exception, and may trigger notice, fines, and abatement.
