Full Breakdown
Lake County Code § 93.04 sets a numeric limit for vehicles: a light motor vehicle may not exceed 80 dBA in speed zones of 35 mph or less within the unincorporated county, with measurements taken at least 15 feet from the edge of the violator's lane of travel. It is separately unlawful to operate a light motor vehicle that causes excessive noise from a defective or modified exhaust, rapid acceleration or deceleration, engine revving, or tire squealing. This layers on top of Indiana state law: IC 9-19-8-3 requires every motor vehicle's muffler or noise-dissipative device to be in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive noise, and IC 9-19-8-2 bars muffler leaks, alteration or deterioration.
Violations & Fines
Vehicle-noise violations of § 93.04 are punished under the general penalty § 10.99, enforced by the Lake County Police Department through Lake Superior Court, County Division. Loud car-stereo violations under § 93.08 carry their own steeper fines (up to $2,500/day).
