Coyotes are increasingly present in Suffolk County. Management is governed by New York Department of Environmental Conservation rules; killing coyotes outside the regulated hunting season generally requires a permit.
Eastern coyotes have established populations on Long Island, including parts of Suffolk County. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulates coyote hunting and trapping under Environmental Conservation Law Article 11. A regulated hunting season runs from October 1 through March 26 with a valid hunting license. Outside the season, coyotes posing immediate threats to people, pets, or livestock may be addressed under nuisance wildlife rules. Suffolk County does not authorize free-fire or unregulated lethal removal. Residents should secure trash, supervise small pets, and report aggressive coyotes to DEC Region 1.
Illegal taking: violation of NY ECL Article 11; fines from two hundred fifty to two thousand dollars per offense plus possible license revocation.
