Shasta County Code Section 6.04.050 requires owners to control their dogs and prohibits allowing any dog to enter the grounds of any school unless leashed and under control. Dogs running at large in public areas are subject to impoundment by the Shasta County Sheriff Animal Regulation Unit. Owners must prevent their animals from trespassing on or damaging the property of others.
Shasta County's Title 6 (Animals) sets out the responsibilities of dog owners. Section 6.04.050 makes it unlawful for the owner or possessor of any dog to allow it to enter upon the grounds of any school unless the dog is secured by a leash and is under the control of its possessor, or is securely fastened by a leash to a fixture. Beyond schools, the county relies on at-large prohibitions and trespass provisions to control loose dogs. Section 6.04.050 also makes it unlawful for the owner or possessor of any animal to allow it to trespass on public or private property so as to damage or destroy any property, and extends this to open range when public health or welfare is endangered. Dogs running at large may be impounded by the Animal Regulation Unit. Rabies vaccination and licensing of dogs four months and older is required throughout the county. Vicious or dangerous dogs are subject to separate procedures under Chapter 6.04 including impoundment, restrictions, or destruction.
Dogs found at large can be impounded with owner responsible for fees to redeem. Repeat offenses may lead to administrative citations. Failure to license a dog can result in a fine. Allowing an animal to trespass and damage property exposes the owner to civil liability and county enforcement under Section 6.04.050. Dangerous-dog procedures can result in mandatory containment, muzzle requirements, or destruction.
