Prince George's County prohibits keeping unlicensed wild, exotic, vicious, or dangerous animals as pets, for breeding, sale, or display. Native wildlife and non-domestic cats are specifically banned without a director's permit.
County Code Sec. 3-176 bars any person from keeping an unlicensed wild, exotic, vicious, or dangerous animal as a pet or for breeding, sale, or exhibition. It separately forbids keeping any ground hog, skunk, raccoon, opossum, fox, bear, wolf, other native wildlife, or member of the cat family other than the domestic cat, whether gratuitously or for a fee. The Director of Animal Services may issue a permit for keeping or displaying an exotic or wild animal only after inspection and under conditions set by the Administrator. Enforcement is by the Animal Services Division of the Department of the Environment, which can seize prohibited animals.
Keeping a prohibited exotic or native wild animal without a permit leads to seizure of the animal and civil or criminal penalties.
