Coral Gables prohibits keeping wild animals within city limits under Chapter 10 of the Code of Ordinances. Exemptions apply only to zoos, pet shops, medical institutions, and licensed facilities. Florida FWC regulations also govern possession of captive wildlife statewide.
The City of Coral Gables prohibits keeping any wild animal within city limits under Chapter 10 (Animals) of the Code of Ordinances. This prohibition is broadly defined and covers exotic mammals, reptiles, and other non-domesticated species. The only exemptions apply to zoos, pet shops, medical or scientific institutions, and other facilities properly licensed for the showing or keeping of wild animals. Additionally, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulations under Chapter 68A-6 of the Florida Administrative Code govern statewide possession of captive wildlife, classifying animals into three classes with varying permit requirements. Class I animals (large cats, bears, great apes) require the most restrictive permits and are effectively prohibited for personal possession. Class II animals (smaller primates, medium cats, alligators) require a Class II wildlife license. Class III animals (smaller exotics) require a no-cost personal pet license. Coral Gables' local prohibition supersedes the state's more permissive approach.
Violations of the wild animal prohibition are enforced by Code Enforcement at (305) 460-5216 in coordination with Animal Services at (305) 884-1101. Violations result in citation notices, mandatory removal of the animal, and fines. FWC may also pursue state-level enforcement.
