Jefferson County (Louisville Metro) LMCO Chapter 91 Β§ 91.140 regulates exotic species. Prohibited wild animals may not be kept without written approval from the Metro Animal Services Director. Most exotic wildlife is not permitted. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife (KRS Ch. 150) also restricts native wildlife. Standard pets include dogs, cats, common small pets, and reptiles.
LMCO Chapter 91 Β§ 91.140 governs exotic species throughout Jefferson County since the 2003 Metro consolidation. Permitted 'Domestic Animals' include dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, rats, reptiles, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets. 'Prohibited wild animals' may only be kept with express written permission from the MAS Director, which is granted only if the animal poses no public health or safety risk. Theatrical exhibitions featuring prohibited wild animals require additional permits. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife Resources (KRS Chapter 150) also restricts possession of native wildlife. Louisville Metro does not publish a specific prohibited species list; the MAS Director has case-by-case authority.
Keeping prohibited wild animals without authorization: Class A misdemeanor, fine up to $500 and/or 12 months imprisonment (LMCO Ch. 91). MAS can impound animals. Each day constitutes a separate offense.
