LMCO Chapter 91 Β§ 91.140 regulates exotic species in Louisville Metro. Prohibited wild animals may not be kept without express written permission from the Director of Metro Animal Services. Theatrical exhibitions featuring prohibited wild animals require a permit. Most exotic wildlife is not permitted as pets in Jefferson County.
Under LMCO Chapter 91 Β§ 91.140, Louisville Metro regulates keeping of exotic species, including record-keeping and permit requirements. The Animal Ordinance defines 'Domestic Animals' as dogs, cats, rabbits, mice, rats, reptiles, guinea pigs, chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils, and ferrets β these are the standard permitted pets. Wildlife and prohibited wild animals may not be kept without express written approval from the Metro Animal Services Director, granted only if it can be demonstrated the animal poses no threat to public health or safety. 'Theatrical exhibitions' involving prohibited wild animals require permits. Kentucky state law through KRS Chapter 150 (Department of Fish and Wildlife) also restricts keeping of native wildlife. Louisville Metro does not maintain a public 'prohibited species list' in its code; the Metro Animal Services Director has authority to determine animal classifications on a case-by-case basis.
Keeping prohibited wild animals without authorization: Class A misdemeanor, fine up to $500 and/or up to 12 months imprisonment (LMCO Ch. 91 penalties). MAS can impound animals. Repeat violations: each day constitutes a separate offense.
