LMCO Chapter 91 (Β§ 91.002) requires all dogs off the owner's premises to be restrained by a lead or leash controlled by a responsible person. Dangerous and potentially dangerous dogs require a leash no longer than 4 feet and must be securely muzzled when off the owner's property. Off-leash areas in designated Metro Parks are permitted exceptions.
Under LMCO Β§ 91.002, any dog off the owner's property must be restrained by a lead or leash under the control of a responsible person physically able to control the dog. The only exceptions are: designated off-leash areas approved by the Kentucky Department of Parks or Louisville Metro Parks; and dangerous/potentially dangerous dogs, which must be on a leash no longer than 4 feet AND muzzled at all times when off the owner's premises. Dogs must also have current license tags and rabies vaccination tags (required at 4 months of age). Microchipping is required for dogs found guilty of dangerous behavior. The 2021 Animal Ordinance update governs current rules. Metro Animal Services (MAS) enforces compliance.
Violation of Β§ 91.002 restraint requirements: Class A misdemeanor. Fine up to $500 and/or imprisonment up to 12 months. Each day constitutes a separate offense. Conviction may require relinquishment of the animal.
