Lafayette, LA Animal Ordinances: Mandatory Spay/Neuter (2026)

Chapter 10 of the Lafayette City-Parish Code has no blanket spay/neuter mandate for owned pets; sterilization elsewhere in the chapter is either optional, such as the consent-based sterilization offered to owners reclaiming an impounded animal under § 10-101(c)(5), or built into the adoption fee under § 10-101(h). The one true mandatory sterilization requirement sits in § 10-267(5), part of the keeping requirements for an animal that the animal care center supervisor or the animal care center advisory board has classified as potentially dangerous or dangerous under the procedures in §§ 10-263 through 10-266.

That subsection requires the animal, if not already sterilized, to be rendered incapable of reproduction at the owner's own expense within 30 days of the designation, with proof of the sterilization filed with the Animal Care Center Supervisor. 00 and comes with a red identification tag under § 10-268(a)-(b). 00, subjects the animal to immediate seizure and impoundment, and can revoke the animal's license and keeping permit entirely, with revocation itself leading to humane euthanasia under § 10-267(10)'s final clause.
