Dogs and cats licensed in Kansas City must be microchipped under Chapter 14, with the chip number on file with KC Animal Health and Public Safety to speed reunification through KC Pet Project.
Kansas City Code Chapter 14 requires microchip identification for every dog and cat licensed inside city limits. Owners submit chip numbers when purchasing or renewing the annual pet license, and the registry is shared with KC Pet Project to expedite owner reunification when strays are intercepted. Chips must be ISO-standard 15-digit and registered to a current owner address. Veterinarians, KC Pet Project clinics, and several rescue partners offer chipping for under $30. The rule covers all four counties of Kansas City: Jackson, Clay, Platte, and Cass.
Licensing a pet without a registered chip number, or failing to update owner contact information after a move, is a municipal infraction with fines starting around $50.
