Kansas City, MO Animal Ordinances: Chickens & Livestock (2026)

City code bars keeping livestock (horses, mules, cattle, sheep, goats, swine, ostriches, emus and cassowaries) or similarly sized wild animals within 200 feet of any building used by people, other than the owner's own dwelling. Past that 200-foot line, no more than two such animals are allowed, unless the property carries an RA agricultural zoning designation, a legal nonconformance certificate for agricultural or stable use, or is a licensed commercial riding academy or stockyard. Livestock cannot run at large and gates must be kept chained and padlocked. Manure must be removed or stored so it doesn't attract flies or cause odors. A director of neighborhood services can grant time-limited special exceptions to the 200-foot rule after notifying neighbors within that radius.
