Full Breakdown

080(A) makes it unlawful for any person to own or possess more than six dogs over four months old on any single lot, premises, dwelling, building, structure, vessel, or living accommodation, except as the section itself allows and except for legal uses already in place when the chapter was enacted. Owners who want to keep more than six can apply to the sheriff's office animal regulation unit for a dog hobbyist permit or, for agricultural properties zoned for full-time agricultural use, a ranch dog owner permit covering up to twenty dogs kept for personal, recreational, or agricultural purposes such as herding or protecting livestock.

A non-commercial dog sanctuary permit is required separately for anyone keeping more than twenty dogs for non-commercial, philanthropic, or charitable purposes, and a commercial animal establishment permit covers larger for-profit operations. Each permit runs for one year, requires proof of current rabies vaccination for every dog, and can carry conditions the animal regulation unit sets for the dogs' humane care; none of these permits excuses the holder from separately required zoning, use permit, or building approvals. 040, or breach of a permit condition, with an appeal available to the sheriff.

Violations & Fines

Keeping more than six dogs over four months old without a dog hobbyist, ranch dog, or sanctuary permit is unlawful under Section 6.04.080(A), and a dog hobbyist or ranch dog owner who lacks a valid current permit is separately in violation; permit revocation follows a chapter violation, a related zoning or building violation, or a dangerous-dog finding, with enforcement under Chapter 6.04's general penalty provisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many dogs can I legally keep in unincorporated Shasta County?
Up to six dogs over four months old on a single lot or premises without any special permit. Keeping more requires a dog hobbyist permit, or a ranch dog owner permit on land zoned for full-time agricultural use, issued by the sheriff's animal regulation unit.
Does a ranch dog permit let me keep unlimited dogs?
No. A ranch dog owner permit under Section 6.04.080(B) covers not more than twenty dogs over four months old kept for personal, recreational, noncommercial, or agricultural purposes on land zoned for full-time agricultural use, and it does not exempt the holder from zoning or building requirements.
Can my dog permit be revoked?
Yes. Section 6.04.080(F) allows revocation if the permit holder is convicted of a violation of the animal chapter or animal-care law, violates zoning, health, or building laws tied to where the dogs are kept, is found to own a dangerous or vicious dog, or breaks a permit condition; the holder can appeal the revocation to the sheriff.
