Redding, CA Animal Ordinances: Pet Limits (2026)

150(A) of the Redding Municipal Code makes it unlawful to keep, harbor or maintain more than six dogs or six cats, or any combination of the two exceeding a total of six, in or about a dwelling or its curtilage, once each animal is older than four months. 010 defines to include any property where more than six dogs or cats, in combination, are kept and maintained for a purpose other than breeding, buying, selling or boarding. The same section folds pot-bellied pigs into the household cap: no more than one pot-bellied pig may be kept at a dwelling, and the combined total of dogs, cats and that one pig still cannot exceed six animals.

Subsection (B) ties the definition of 'dwelling' to whatever the city's zoning regulations use for that term, so the cap follows the zoning code's household definition rather than a separate animal-control one. Subsection (C) grandfathers any owner who already had more than six dogs or cats on the date the ordinance took effect, as long as those animals stay licensed under the chapter; the protection does not extend to any additional dog or cat the owner acquires after that date. 010's separate definition covering anyone in the business of keeping, breeding, buying or selling dogs or cats, is not bound by the six-animal household cap.
