Shreveport's Building Safety: The Rules That Matter

Fire Sprinkler Requirements

Apartment buildings in Shreveport with three or more dwelling units and no automatic sprinkler system must install an automatic stove-top fire suppression device over every stove under Sec. 30-70 of the Code of Ordinances. The device must trigger without a resident touching it and needs no scheduled inspection, only replacement by its manufacturer's expiration date. Commercial fire sprinkler permits carry a $50 minimum fee.

Shreveport enforces the Louisiana State Plumbing Code, incorporated by reference through Sec. 22-26, and Sec. 22-2 requires every plumber to register annually with the permits and inspections division before pulling a permit. Master plumbers pay $100 to renew, journeymen $25 and apprentices $10, and unlike electricians, plumbers must always show a current state license.

The city will not issue a new permit to any applicant who has an uncorrected violation outstanding on an existing permit until that violation is resolved.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Every short-term rental in Shreveport must keep working carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers in place at all times the property is occupied by guests, under the Unified Development Code's short-term rental health and safety standards, alongside annual cleaning of any wood-burning fireplace or stove.
