Chino's Food Trucks & Mobile Vendors: The Rules That Matter

Every city handles food trucks & mobile vendors a little differently. In Chino, California, there are 3 distinct rules that residents and property owners should be aware of. Some are stricter than what neighboring cities enforce, and others are more relaxed. Here is what you need to know.

Food Truck Permits

Chino requires a discretionary special business permit, reviewed by a city special permit committee, for any food truck or other retail sales made from a vehicle, truck or trailer within city limits.

Operating a food truck without a special business permit violates § 5.04.380(A). The special permit committee may revoke or suspend the permit for violating city law or code conditions, following a hearing, under § 5.04.510; the permit must be posted or carried and shown on request under § 5.04.480.

Sidewalk & Mobile Vending

Chino limits vending carts and kiosks to defined plaza areas in commercial or mixed-use developments and caps them at five feet wide, nine feet long and six feet tall.

Siting a cart or kiosk outside an approved plaza area, exceeding the size limits, staffing more than two employees, or selling alcohol from a cart violates Section 20.21.150 and can void the site approval.

Vending Zones

Chino bars stationary sidewalk food and merchandise carts from residential zones outright, and limits all sidewalk vending there to between 8 a.m. and 30 minutes before sunset.

Key details: Residential zones: No stationary vending allowed at all. Roaming carts: May still move through residential zones. Permitted hours: 8:00 a.m. to 30 minutes before sunset. Adopting ordinance: Ord. 2020-002, § 6, 2020.

A stationary cart operating in a residential zone, or any sidewalk vendor operating there outside the 8 a.m.-to-30-minutes-before-sunset window, violates Section 5.28.060 and risks permit suspension or revocation under Chapter 5.28.
