Independence's Noise Ordinances: The Rules That Matter

Residential properties face even tighter nighttime limits: continuous sound above 50 dBA at the property line between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. violates Section 7.10.006.

Violating any part of Article 10, including the 11:00 p.m.-to-7:00 a.m. curfew on public streets, carries a fine of up to $500.00, up to six months in jail, or both under Section 7.10.011, and each day a violation continues is a separate offense. The Police Department enforces the public-property curfew; the Director of Health enforces the residential decibel table; courts may also issue an injunction against a recurring nuisance under Section 7.10.013.

Leaf Blower Rules

Independence has no gas-powered leaf blower ban; the equipment is exempt from noise limits in residential districts only between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

Amplified Music & Outdoor Sound

Outdoor sound sources on private property in Independence can't exceed 60 dBA by day or 50 dBA overnight at a residential property line, per City Code Section 7.10.006.
