Las Vegas's Sign Regulations: The Rules That Matter

Garage Sale Signs

Garage sale signs in Las Vegas are regulated under LVMC Title 19 sign standards and Code Enforcement provisions. Signs may be placed on the property where the sale is occurring but are prohibited in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, street signs, or traffic signals. Signs must be removed immediately after the sale ends. Off-premises directional signs placed on public property are subject to removal by Code Enforcement.

Freeway-Facing Signs

Freestanding signs in Las Vegas commercial and industrial districts max out at 40 feet, but a sign within 200 feet of an elevated freeway right-of-way can rise 30 feet above that freeway's own grade. Signs readable from Interstate 15, Interstate 215, US 95 or Interstate 515 can reach 80 feet total, though that extra height needs City Council authorization after Planning Commission review.

LVMC 19.00.090 makes any structure or use erected, altered or maintained contrary to Title 19, including an oversized or unpermitted freeway sign, unlawful and a public nuisance, enforceable by the Director, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, or other designated City staff. The City can issue a stop-work order, deny or revoke the required sign certificate, pursue administrative action to modify or suspend an approval, or bring a nuisance abatement action in court; remedies are cumulative.

Window Signs

Window signs in Las Vegas commercial and industrial buildings cannot cover more than 25% of a building elevation's total window area under LVMC 19.08.120(F)(18). In the P-O, O and C-D districts, combined wall and window sign area also cannot exceed what a wall sign alone would be allowed, and animated or electronic message signs are barred outright near single-family residential property.

Digital Billboards

In the Downtown Casino Overlay District, off-premise signs with rotating or changing messages must change content at least every 30 seconds under LVMC 19.10.100(C)(12), and every animated sign must run continuously 24 hours a day, changing no less often than every 30 seconds, per LVMC 19.10.100(C)(11).

Signs in the Downtown Casino Overlay Sub-district that fail to meet the 30-second change interval, run without the required neon-framed faceplate, or encroach beyond the 8-foot right-of-way limit are subject to the Title 19 enforcement scheme in LVMC 19.00.090: the Director, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, or other designated staff can pursue administrative action to modify, suspend or revoke the sign approval, issue a stop-work order, or treat the noncompliant sign as a public nuisance subject to abatement.

Political Signs

Las Vegas regulates signs under LVMC Title 19, Chapter 19.14 (Sign Standards). Political signs on private property are constitutionally protected and generally permitted without a permit. However, signs must not be placed in public rights-of-way, on utility poles, or in medians. Political signs in residential areas are subject to size limits, typically not exceeding 6 square feet per sign face.
