Skokie's Sign Regulations: The Rules That Matter

Digital signs in Skokie, called Electronic Message Centers, must comply with Skokie Village Code § 82-18: no flashing, chasing, or animated content, message changes no more than once every 20 seconds, and brightness capped at 5,000 nits by day and 500 nits from dusk to dawn, with an ambient light sensor to auto-adjust.

Beyond that, Skokie's general penalty under Section 1-6 allows a fine of up to $750.00 per day the violation continues.

Political Signs

Village of Skokie Code lets residents post political signs, meaning signs for candidates, parties or referenda, in public rights-of-way only on official election days. Section 90-41(f) fixes a placement band around every polling place: no sign may stand closer than 100 feet or farther than 300 feet from the entrance. Every sign must come down the moment polls close that night.

Garage Sale Signs

Skokie caps garage sale advertising at two signs in the public right-of-way per sale, bans flags, banners and buntings, and requires each sign to read Garage Sale with the name and address of the person responsible for placement and removal. Signs must be free-standing, no larger than four square feet, and displayed only during permitted hours under Skokie Village Code Section 26-714 in Cook County, Illinois.

Section 26-712 makes any violation of the garage sale article subject to the penalties set out in Section 1-6, on top of any penalty specifically provided elsewhere in the article. Signs left up past the permitted hours, banners or buntings displayed, or more than two signs posted in the right-of-way all violate Section 26-714 and can draw a citation; unremoved signs are the permittee's responsibility to correct.

Window Signs

Skokie caps window signage at 25 percent of an individual window pane's surface, counting signs, packaged products, packaging and other opaque materials toward that coverage limit. In the CX Core Mixed-Use district, only one sign is allowed per window pane or glass door. The rule sits in Skokie Village Code Section 82-23 and applies to every commercial storefront in Cook County, Illinois.
