Soliciting & Door-to-Door

Las Vegas's Soliciting & Door-to-Door: The Rules That Matter

By CityRuleLookup

Every city handles soliciting & door-to-door a little differently. In Las Vegas, Nevada, there are 2 distinct rules that residents and property owners should be aware of. Some are stricter than what neighboring cities enforce, and others are more relaxed. Here is what you need to know.

No-Knock Registry

Posting a sign reading "No Peddlers or Solicitors" near your door legally bars door-to-door sellers under LVMC 6.62.120(E), unless you have personally invited them first. The same Section also bars peddlers from claiming exclusive rights to a location, working from a fixed stand, operating in congested areas, or entering a pedestrian mall without the mall management's approval.

Key details: Governing section: LVMC 6.62.120(E). Sign wording protected: "No Peddlers or Solicitors" or similar. Exception: Prior invitation from a resident. Also barred: Stationary stands, congested areas. Max penalty: $1,000 fine / 6 months jail.

Violating LVMC 6.62.120, including ignoring a posted "No Peddlers or Solicitors" sign, is punishable under the Title 1 general penalty, LVMC 1.24.010: a fine of up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both, with each day a continuing violation a separate offense under 1.24.020. A permit holder who repeatedly ignores posted signs also risks denial, suspension or revocation of the peddler/solicitor permit under 6.62.060.

Solicitor Permits

Anyone who peddles or solicits door-to-door or on Las Vegas streets needs both a peddler/solicitor permit and a work card under LVMC 6.62.020, plus a $5,000 surety bond and a $50 nonrefundable application fee. Licensed City businesses and their own agents are exempt, but an agent working for someone else's business still needs an agent solicitation permit.

Key details: Permit + work card required: LVMC 6.62.020. Application fee: $50, nonrefundable. Surety bond: $5,000 per permit. Permit fee: $50/week or $150/month. Permit term: 7 to 30 days, renewable to 6 months.

Peddling or soliciting without both the required permit and work card, or violating any Chapter 6.62 condition, is punishable under the Title 1 general penalty, LVMC 1.24.010: a fine up to $1,000, up to six months in jail, or both, with each day a separate offense under 1.24.020. The Director can also deny, suspend or revoke the permit for cause under 6.62.060.

This is one of the stricter rules in Las Vegas's municipal code. If you are unsure whether your situation complies, it is worth checking with the city before proceeding.

The Bottom Line

Las Vegas's soliciting & door-to-door rules are a mixed bag. Some areas are strict, others are relaxed, and the details matter. The best approach is to check the specific rule that applies to your situation rather than assuming Las Vegas is broadly strict or permissive.
