Pool Permits

Before building a swimming pool or altering an existing one, Village of Skokie Code Sec. 22-212 requires a permit issued and signed by the Village Manager or designee, applicable to private and public pools alike in Cook County, Illinois. The only exception is a portable pool holding 500 gallons or less; public pool applications must also include the State Department of Public Health's construction approval.

The Village Manager or designee may also decline to issue a certificate of occupancy or operating permit for a pool built without the required construction permit.

Fencing & Safety Requirements

Village of Skokie Code Sec. 22-219(e) requires every private residential swimming pool, belowground, aboveground permanent, or aboveground portable, to be enclosed by a 4-foot fence with self-closing, self-latching gates. The rule, part of the Village's sanitary and equipment standards for pools in Cook County, Illinois, applies unless the whole yard containing the pool is already enclosed by a fence meeting the same specifications.

The Village Manager or designee can also refuse to issue or renew a pool operating permit, and under Sec. 22-216 may order the pool closed until the safety requirement is met.
