Fontana's Trash & Recycling: The Rules That Matter

Dumpster Rules

Fontana requires apartment buildings of five or more units and commercial accounts to use city-approved dumpster or roll-off containers under Sec. 24-14(b), and lets commercial customers request a locking rolling container that must stay latched except when it's being loaded or emptied, per Sec. 24-42(b).

Fontana makes it unlawful to dump, deposit, place or bury refuse on any lot, land, public place or waterway, and any vehicle used to do the dumping is declared a nuisance subject to seizure and forfeiture, under Sec. 24-112. The city adopted the forfeiture scheme specifically to deter people from hauling refuse into local neighborhoods.

Bin Placement Rules

Fontana limits when residential trash, recycling and organics carts can sit at the curb: no earlier than 24 hours before your scheduled pickup and pulled back in within 12 hours after, under Sec. 24-12(c). Between collections, carts must stay on the property in a clean, closed condition.
