Grand Prairie's Trash & Recycling: The Rules That Matter

Every city handles trash & recycling a little differently. In Grand Prairie, Texas, there are 8 distinct rules that residents and property owners should be aware of. Some are stricter than what neighboring cities enforce, and others are more relaxed. Here is what you need to know.

Bin Placement Rules

Grand Prairie tells residents exactly where and when to put out garbage containers: at the alley if one is designated for collection, otherwise at curbside, and never earlier than 8:00 p.m. the night before pickup. Containers must also stay closed to keep out insects, rodents and other animals under section 26-108.

Collection Schedule

Grand Prairie requires every owner, occupant or person in control of a premises to carry garbage removal service, collected twice a week for $22.26 a month per residential unit, with recyclables picked up once a week. Failing to pay puts collection service at risk of termination under section 26-113.

Dumpster Rules

Grand Prairie requires every commercial, institutional and industrial property to keep garbage and trash in approved containers placed where the city's collector can reach them, under Code of Ordinances Sec. 26-116. Gated dumpster enclosures need a device holding the gate open on pickup day, and any compactor on residential-zoned property must sit inside a self-latching six-foot fence.

Violating Section 26-116 is a misdemeanor under Section 26-123, punishable by a fine set in Section 1-8 of the Code of Ordinances for each act and each day the violation continues. Solid waste crews or code enforcement can cite an owner for an unenclosed compactor, a blocked gate mechanism, or a container left where the hauler cannot access it, and the city may also pursue civil remedies alongside the criminal fine.

Pickup Rules & Schedules

Grand Prairie provides twice-weekly garbage collection and weekly recycling. Collection schedule varies by zone: check by address online. Trash must be at curb by 7 AM on collection day and containers retrieved promptly.

Yard Waste Collection

Grand Prairie will not collect grass clippings as a regular service, but brush and other yard trimmings qualify for pickup if bundled correctly. Section 26-112 caps brush lengths at six feet, stack height at three feet, bundle weight at 50 pounds, and volume at one cubic yard per pickup day.

Grand Prairie treats improper yard-waste disposal as a public-health violation of Chapter 26. Section 26-123(a) makes any violation of the article a misdemeanor, and because section 1-8(c) of the Code sets fire safety, zoning and public health and sanitation offenses, including dumping refuse, at up to $2,000 per day, an oversized or overweight brush pile left for the city to force-collect can draw a fine far higher than an ordinary $500 code violation, charged for each day it continues.

Illegal Dumping

Grand Prairie Code § 13-108 makes it unlawful to discharge, deposit, or dump hazardous or other regulated waste on any sidewalk, alley, street, drain, waterbody, or public or private property. Section 13-109 bans letting that waste accumulate beyond state or federal time limits. The environmental services director enforces both sections, and violators face misdemeanor fines plus cleanup costs billed back to the responsible party.

Each day the waste remains is a separate offense. Obstructing a city employee or contractor engaged in abatement is a separate misdemeanor under Section 13-97(b), and the responsible party remains liable for the city's full cleanup costs under Section 13-112.

Recycling Requirements

Grand Prairie's recycling collectors cannot mix recyclables with garbage, and residential and commercial recycling customers must keep a separate garbage container too. Reusable recycling containers must come off the curb by 7:00 a.m. the morning after collection, and recycling boxes can never sit in the city right-of-way, per section 26-114.

Bulk Item Disposal
