Trash & Recycling in League City, TX: What Residents Actually Need to Know
If you live in League City or are thinking about moving there, trash & recycling are one of those things you probably won't think about until they affect you directly. League City has 4 specific rules on the books covering different aspects of trash & recycling, and some of them might surprise you.
Pickup Rules & Schedules
League City collects trash twice a week by zone (Mon/Thu, Tue/Fri, or Wed/Sat), with recycling on your trash day. Find your zone on the city's map. Holiday pickups move to your next regular collection day.
Key details: Collection frequency: Trash twice weekly by zone. Find your day: City Garbage & Recycling zone map. Holiday shift: Next regular collection day. Bulk pickup: 2 items on your trash day. Set-out time: By 7 a.m. on collection day.
Carts must be at the curb by 7 a.m. (no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before); no more than two heavy-trash items per collection day, placed at least four feet from other objects.
League City is more permissive than most cities when it comes to pickup rules & schedules. That said, there are still limits.
Bulk Item Disposal
League City provides bulk item pickup through the contracted waste hauler. Section 94-2 limits placing refuse near public ways to 12 hours before scheduled collection. Illegal dumping is prohibited under Section 94-1.
Key details: Code Section: §94-1, §94-2. Placement Time: 12 hours before pickup. Hazardous Waste: Separate disposal required. Max Fine: $500 per offense.
Illegal dumping: fine up to $500 per offense. Early placement of bulk items: fine up to $500 under §94-2. Each day of violation is separate offense.
The rules around bulk item disposal in League City lean permissive, but that does not mean anything goes.
Recycling Requirements
League City provides curbside recycling through AmeriWaste, the city's contracted solid waste provider. Residents receive a 48-gallon closed-top wheeled cart for recycling. Service is included in the monthly residential garbage rate of $21.69/month (effective May 2025).
Key details: Provider: AmeriWaste League City Inc.. Recycling Cart: 48-gallon wheeled cart provided. Monthly Rate: $21.69 (eff. May 2025). Hotline: 281-554-1100.
Contaminated recycling bins may result in non-collection. Contact the Trash Hotline at 281-554-1100 or AmeriWaste at 281-331-8400 for service issues.
Bin Placement Rules
League City residents must place trash bins at the curb by 7 AM on pickup days, but no earlier than 6 PM the night before. All trash inside the regular bin must be bagged. Trash receptacles must be 55 gallons or less. Pickup occurs between 7 AM and 7 PM on scheduled days.
Key details: Set Out: By 7 AM, no earlier than 6 PM prior evening. Pickup Time: Between 7 AM and 7 PM. Bin Size: 55 gallons or less. Bagging: All trash must be bagged.
Trash left at the curb on non-pickup days may trigger code compliance action. Contact Trash Hotline 281-554-1100 or AmeriWaste 281-331-8400.
If you are coming from a city with tighter rules, you will find League City gives residents more flexibility on bin placement rules.
The Bottom Line
Compared to many U.S. cities, League City gives residents more room on trash & recycling. 3 of the 4 rules here are rated permissive. But permissive does not mean unregulated. There are still requirements, and the city does enforce them when violations are reported.
All of the above reflects League City's municipal code as of our last review. If you need specifics on fines, exemptions, or filing requirements, the detailed ordinance pages linked above have the full breakdown.
