Sedona's Trash & Recycling: The Rules That Matter

Every city handles trash & recycling a little differently. In Sedona, Arizona, there are 7 distinct rules that residents and property owners should be aware of. Some are stricter than what neighboring cities enforce, and others are more relaxed. Here is what you need to know.

Bin Placement Rules

Sedona limits when solid waste and recycling carts can sit at the curb. Containers may go out no earlier than noon the day before pickup and must come back off the street by 11:59 p.m. on collection day. Between pickups, carts stay on private property, stored so they are not visible from the public street.

A first cart-placement violation costs $100.00. A second violation on the same property within 180 days costs $200.00. Any further violation runs $250.00 to $2,500 per SCC 1.15.010, and an uncorrected violation becomes a new offense every day past the 24-hour correction window under SCC 8.05.100.

Collection Schedule

Sedona's code does not print a citywide trash pickup calendar. Every responsible party must put solid waste and recycling into containers supplied by their own service provider, and it is that private hauler, not city hall, who fixes which day of the week your street gets picked up.

Bulk Item Disposal

Sedona's code recognizes bulk items like brush, construction debris and metal goods as their own waste category and lets them skip the standard container rule when properly prepared for a bulk waste collection service. The code doesn't set a citywide bulk pickup day or fee, leaving that to your service provider.

Bulk items left out without being properly prepared for a bulk waste collection service can be charged as unlawful accumulation of solid waste under SCC 8.05.080(B), carrying the SCC 8.05.100 penalty schedule of $100.00 for a first violation up to $2,500 per violation for repeat offenses.

Sedona is more permissive than most cities when it comes to bulk item disposal. That said, there are still limits.

Illegal Dumping

Dumping rubbish, trash, filth or debris on property you don't own or control is a class 1 misdemeanor in Sedona, or a civil violation prosecuted under the city's general penalty chapter. Whoever dumps it also owes the city for every dollar spent cleaning it up.

Key details: Charge level: Class 1 misdemeanor or civil violation. Max fine: $2,500 under SCC 1.15.010. Max jail time: 6 months. Cleanup cost liability: Dumper pays all removal costs. Notice before city cleanup: 30 days written notice.

A class 1 misdemeanor conviction under SCC 8.10.220(A) carries up to a $2,500 fine, up to six months in jail, or both under SCC 1.15.010(A), plus full liability for the city's removal and abatement costs under SCC 8.10.210, which become a lien on the property if unpaid within 30 days of notice.

This is one of the stricter rules in Sedona's municipal code. If you are unsure whether your situation complies, it is worth checking with the city before proceeding.

Recycling Requirements

Every recycling and solid waste container in Sedona, wherever it sits in the city, must be secured or stored so wildlife can't get into it. The rule exists specifically to keep bears, javelina and other animals out of trash and recyclables near the surrounding Coconino National Forest.

Failing to keep recycling wildlife-secure triggers the SCC 8.05.100 penalty schedule: $100.00 for a first violation, $200.00 for a repeat within 180 days at the same premises, and $250.00 to $2,500 for further violations, plus responsibility for cleaning up any scattered material under SCC 8.05.070(E).

Pickup Rules & Schedules

Sedona requires trash and recycling to fit inside a closed-lid container for collection, with nothing stacked around the outside of the can. Properties without enough capacity must get more containers, and piling waste on the ground instead of using one is unlawful.

Recycling Rules

Sedona treats recycling containers the same as trash containers when it comes to upkeep: they must stay clean and sanitary, odorous material must be bagged and tied, and lids have to stay closed between pickups. Only the responsible party or the service provider may touch a container.
