Ascension Parish, LA Building Safety: Building Permits (2026)

Section 6-5(500) of the Ascension Parish Code requires anyone who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building, or to install or alter an electrical, gas, mechanical or plumbing system, to first apply to the Building Official and obtain a permit. The Building Official reviews the application under section 505, which requires a description of the work, the property's legal description or address, the intended use, construction documents and a stated valuation, then acts on it within a reasonable time under section 506.

An application is deemed abandoned if it sits idle for 180 days, though the Building Official can grant extensions up to 90 days at a time under section 507. Once issued, a permit expires if work does not start within 180 days, or if work is suspended for 180 days after starting, under section 509; the Building Official may again grant extensions of up to 180 days. Permit holders must post the permit at the jobsite in a visible spot under section 511. 00 minimum.
