Full Breakdown

Westland has no separate local building code text: under Sec. 22-31 the city adopted the Michigan Building Code, as promulgated by the Michigan Construction Code Commission, and specifically assumed responsibility for its administration and enforcement. Interior renovation and remodeling work therefore requires a building permit reviewed against the state code by the city's own Building Department, not a separate municipal renovation standard. The adoption was enacted by Ord. No. 191-B-8 (8-20-01) and amended by Ord. No. 107-A (9-2-2008); the underlying construction code itself is state-adopted and amended from Lansing, not by city council.

Violations & Fines

Renovating without a permit, or violating the adopted Building Code, is a misdemeanor or municipal civil infraction under Sec. 22-32, enforced by city-issued appearance tickets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to remodel my kitchen in Westland?
Yes. Westland enforces the Michigan Building Code under Sec. 22-31 and requires a permit for renovation work reviewed and inspected by the city's Building Department.
Does Westland have its own building code separate from the state?
No. Sec. 22-31 adopts the Michigan Building Code by reference; the city administers and enforces the state code rather than writing its own construction standards.
