Full Breakdown
Lafayette City-Parish adopts the latest edition of the National Electrical Code by reference (Code § 26-113), and no electrical work can begin in the city of Lafayette or unincorporated parish without a permit from the community development and planning department (Code § 26-141). Generally only a state-licensed electrical contractor may do the work, though a homeowner can pull a permit for wiring in a single-family home they own and occupy if they can show the inspector sufficient skill to do it safely (Code § 26-114). Permits go void if work is not started within 60 days or is abandoned for six months (Code § 26-147).
Violations & Fines
Doing electrical work without a permit is unlawful (Code § 26-141). Inspectors can disconnect power to hazardous or improperly permitted installations (Code § 26-132), and the permit fee doubles if work begins before the permit is issued (Code § 26-37).
