Lawrence, MA Building Safety: Electrical Permits (2026)

Chapter 15.08, Electrical Code, adopts "the National Board of Fire Underwriters Code for electric wiring and apparatus, as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association," and puts the inspector of wires, working under the fire chief, in charge of enforcing it (15.08.050). Enforcement runs through the fire department: the electrical inspector position was created under General Laws Chapter 166, Section 32, and is appointed by the mayor (15.08.030). No one may start new wiring work, additions, alterations or extensions to old work without giving the electrical inspector written notice at least 24 hours before work begins (15.08.170).

Once wiring is complete, the installer must notify the inspector, who inspects the work and, if it conforms to the Code, issues a certificate of satisfactory inspection; current may not be turned on to any wiring until that certificate issues (15.08.180). A fee is charged for each permit and each inspection, plus an additional fee for any reinspection made necessary by a defect or by the crew finding the job unfinished at the scheduled inspection time (15.08.200). The Chapter 15.08.210 fee table prices residential new-building wiring at 1/10 of 1% of market value, temporary service at $5.00, a new one-meter service at $0.15 per amp, and reinspections at $15.00, among other line items.

Owners who generate 500 kilowatts or more of their own power and employ their own electricians may make repairs without an immediate inspection, but the inspector still audits the plant every six months (15.08.190).
